#g2kgtg – cheese on Saturday

make your own cheese!

make your own cheese!

it’s not over yet byes!   the end of the season is the other side of the weekend, but between then and now is a rare chance to make a #gtkgtg that will soothe the last leg of Christmas.  5H Giving – handmade, homemade, local.

say cheese.  Feta, Paneer, Ricotta.

make cheese.  for real.

my old school friend turned back to the land, and has set up  a farm in Nova Scotia.  home for Christmas, she’s running a Cheesemaking 101 workshop.  I know her as Heather Squires, but she’s known as the CURD GIRL.   she’s running a fun, lovely afternoon of cheesemaking tomorrow, Saturday 2-5 pm on MacPherson Street, near the Mall.  workshop cost is $50, which you can bring.  (if the $ in hand is a deal-breaker let Heather know, and ye can work something out).

also bring milk (whole, red container is best), but all other required materials are supplied. but there will be cheese to taste so if you’d like to bring something to drink with the tasting, that is good.

inbox Heather to let her know you’re coming and get specifics.

and since we’re near the end, thank you.  #g2kgtg the good to know gifts that give series has been a hit!  sharing little treasures that grow up from kitchen tables and creative souls has been a pleasure. thanks to all who have kindly encouraged me, thanks to the new friends i’ve met along the way, and thanks to those who have used their purchasing power to buy local!

(happy to report that there is so many more lovely things out there.  this morning i found my way to Rock Paper Flowers on Water Street West.  there is a whole new world there!  i’m looking forward to finding out more.)

#g2kgtg – light up local!

light up lights#g2kgtg – blocks of light wrapped in a pretty bow!

fits with 5H Giving because they are made locally by a wife and husband team – Maxine Parsons Morgan and Cyril Morgan.  they’ve been making these light blocks out of glass building blocks, Christmas lights, and ribbon for several years now, and selling them at craft fairs and little markets.  they rest as centerpiece for many Christmas tables in and around St. John’s.

ideal as gifts for teachers and party hosts, and it will keep on lighting up Christmas year after year.

inbox Maxine to purchase –  $20. (not that many left!)

the items are all handmade with Ugandan batik fabric and other materials. beads are made from a process of cutting recycled paper into very long triangular strips, rolling them into small bead shapes, painting and repeatedly shellacking each single bead before designing and stringing the beads.

the goods are bought, brought and sold by Bobby Bessey, friend to thegreenrock.ca and yoga teacher.  100% of proceeds goes to Shanti Uganda, an organization that improves infant and maternal health, provides safe women-centered care and supports the wellbeing of birthing mothers and women living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Bobby is leading a group to Uganda in May. visit ShaktiYoga.ca for details.10665346_10152842766516253_1063480403265871519_n

#g2kgtg – tis the season to ReStore!

restore the giving spirit of the season!  the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Logy Bay Road, is a treasure trove of amazing finds that helps Habitat NL help families find affordable home ownership.  5H Giving in spades. vintage, antique, one-of-a-kind or just off the shelf recycled and new surprises that make this Christmas present merry, and Christmas future all the merrier for a family in this province.

people and stores donate the good things they don’t need any more, and the stuff that comes (and goes quickly) is amazing.  last week there was a big old record player, and a gobsmacking cupboard and mantle.  cupboard doors to create with, and so much more.  proceeds from sales of all things help Habitat do its business of building homes with families throughout the province, and there is no HST..

like ReStore Manager Ryan O’Dea says, the ReStore is full of community camaraderie.  the vid tells the story!  it was a gift to Habitat from Roger Maunder, Up Sky Down films.  (Up Sky Down did the You Are Not Alone with Amelia Curran).

tix to a show #g2kgtg

our stories come alive in theatre.  stages in and around St. John’s nurtured magic in the province’s gifts to the country, as beautifully pointed out in these clips by Krystin Pellerin and Petrina Bromley.  they, and others like Allan Hawco, Cathy Jones, Rick Mercer, Mary Walsh and Andy Jones have stepped on to other stages across the country and beyond, but ever so many more of our brilliant, creative shapers and reflectors shine their lights here at home.

colony

Colony of Unrequited Dreams / Artistic Fraud

gifts that support our arts community, like tickets to shows and events are the finest kind of #g2kgtg.  they give the receiver an home-grown treasure, and give to the community that gives so much.  that nails the 5H Giving!

patron of the arts opportunities abound.  The Hall (that is the LSPU Hall, Resource Centre for the Arts) offers a Hall Pass (which includes a couple of drinks!), as well as tickets for upcoming productions. Shows coming include Brazil Square and Spoiled Child Saves the Polar Bears.

Turning 20 this year, Artistic Fraud  is celebrating large with Robert Chafe’s adaptation of Wayne Johnston’s The Colony of Unrequited Dreams in February at the Arts & Culture.  like Oil and Water did last year, it will sell out.

Rising Tide’s Revue is another happy Christmas gift idea.

You can’t get tickets for Shakespeare by the Sea yet – they are working on their summer line-up, but there is this amazing fundraiser that celebrates Scotch and the new year:  Scotch and Hogmanay – January 3rd 2015 at the Newman Wine Vaults.

great gifts.  no waste.
