tix to a show #g2kgtg

our stories come alive in theatre.  stages in and around St. John’s nurtured magic in the province’s gifts to the country, as beautifully pointed out in these clips by Krystin Pellerin and Petrina Bromley.  they, and others like Allan Hawco, Cathy Jones, Rick Mercer, Mary Walsh and Andy Jones have stepped on to other stages across the country and beyond, but ever so many more of our brilliant, creative shapers and reflectors shine their lights here at home.

Colony of Unrequited Dreams / Artistic Fraud

gifts that support our arts community, like tickets to shows and events are the finest kind of #g2kgtg.  they give the receiver an home-grown treasure, and give to the community that gives so much.  that nails the 5H Giving!

patron of the arts opportunities abound.  The Hall (that is the LSPU Hall, Resource Centre for the Arts) offers a Hall Pass (which includes a couple of drinks!), as well as tickets for upcoming productions. Shows coming include Brazil Square and Spoiled Child Saves the Polar Bears.

Turning 20 this year, Artistic Fraud  is celebrating large with Robert Chafe’s adaptation of Wayne Johnston’s The Colony of Unrequited Dreams in February at the Arts & Culture.  like Oil and Water did last year, it will sell out.

Rising Tide’s Revue is another happy Christmas gift idea.

You can’t get tickets for Shakespeare by the Sea yet – they are working on their summer line-up, but there is this amazing fundraiser that celebrates Scotch and the new year:  Scotch and Hogmanay – January 3rd 2015 at the Newman Wine Vaults.

great gifts.  no waste.

Viki makes ’em all special the way you want from her kitchen in the old east end of St. John’s. gluten-free and peanut-free are options. deliciously consumable, smile nurturing, and fun. she decorates to suit the taste (she’s even done a wedding cake for a Habs fan!)

it’s a three generation affair when need be!  at busy times Viki’s mom – who taught her to decorate – and son get involved. it makes the mix all the better.  two weeks notice needed!  call 764-2363, or inbox her.

5H giving: #g2kgtg

5H Givingturns out this #g2kgtg notion is a thang!  thanks to my friend Martha Muzychka for pointing me toward 5H Giving.

5H is kind of a giving philosophy.  the 5H shorthand refers to gifts that are:

homemade (made by you) – what do you love to make?  share that  cookies, playlists, photos… all that..

handmade (made by someone else’s hands in their little place) – the year’s best opportunities for homemade are coming up!  check out the Farmers’ Market, Some Good Market, and the Anna Templeton Christmas Tea and Sale

healthy (good for your body, soul or our collective planet) – om. yoga fits everyone. lots of yoga styles, and lots of options for gift passes. check out Nova Yoga, and Yoga Kula Co-op

brown trouthelpful (helps someone or something).  maybe something like a membership to the Salmonid Association of Eastern Newfoundand for the Angler you love.  SAEN has done a LOT to nurture our rivers and streams, and due in part to their efforts you can trout in the rivers in the middle of St. John’s, or just walk by and enjoy. No. Small. Thing.  email them saen@nfld.com.

from here (things that are ours alone) – Newfoundland Chocolate Company makes the chockie on Duckworth Street (and now at the Mall too), Jumping Bean Coffee roasts the beans here, and sells lovely things from their storefront on Harvey Road, and locally published books are beautiful, smart, and support local in every which way.  check out Boulder Publications!

#g2kgtg – Downtown Comics

Downtown Comics

Downtown Comics St. John’s collector #g2Kgtg

drop in to Downtown Comics for the pop culture collector you love!  DTC has a huge array of stuff, from comic books to Game of Thrones mugs, superhero collectibles to board games, t-shirts and way more.  if you don’t see it you may want to ask.  owner Jason Conway is usually behind the counter – he knows what’s there and if he doesn’t have it, he’ll see if he can get it.

Downtown Comics has been on the go for 15 years.  it is local, and it supports local.  the pic is of a DTC t-shirt, which is made not far away by Living Planet.  the store is also an entry point for the world of comic book art.  local artist Wallace Ryan offers a course in Cartoons and Comic Books through the Anna Templeton Centre, and he is often found in the shop.

good to know gifts that give

somewhere in between those joyous, gauzy memories of perfect Christmas mornings, and the check-out wrought with anxious people there is a place of peace.  i am looking for it.

like the Grinch learned in Whoville, those things we exchange as tokens of love and friendship are not the main point.  but they are nice, and giving feels good.

i love local, and i love giving things that people will like, use, and hopefully will be a bit symbolic of our relationship.  and hopefully won’t leave an unnecessarily big footprint on the planet or humankind.

hits of Christmas past include stuff like wreaths, Clean Don’t Kill non-toxic cleaner, truffles, custom calendars, and boiled wool mitts. (here have been flops too.  unnecessary to detail.)

there is a lot out there.  every day the tiniest little poke around or walk downtown reveals something new.  for the next little while thegreenrock.ca will share Good To Know gifts that give (#g2kgtg), and places to get ’em.

thegreenrock.ca Green Tips #2 – green at home

Video

as it happens here in St. John’s, warm weather is not a distant memory this November 2.  lovely as the sunny skies and warm winds are, it’s a call to ramp up the green living at home.  perfect for thegreenrock.ca’s CCNL Green Team’s second Green Tips vid.  Join David as he talks about compost, saving energy, and what to do with hazardous waste.

As well as hosting, David Maher did the editng and music, with Tamara Segura and Chris Ball co-directing and doing videography.

in July and August 2014 thegreenrock.ca Conservation Corps Green Team – Tamara Segura, Chris Ball, David Maher and Team Lead Jeff Smyth talked and taped, walked in the sun, swung on the swings, got out there and got inspired by the great green good going on in the Northeast Avalon.  Over the coming months their work will be released on thegreenrock.ca.

need a bike? bikeshare!

common topic of conversation – traffic.  car transit in st. john’s seems slower than it ever has been.  but that is just one reason to take the bike.  health, pollution, and putting the bike lanes to use are others!

if you don’t have a bike, or if yours needs a bit of fixing, you can still hit the road.

BIKESHARE is a non-profit organization that supports cycling.  thegreenrock.ca CCNL Green team caught up with Joseph Bautista of Bikeshare, who shares the points and purpose of the organization.  based at Memorial University Bikeshare is one of the many beautiful threads in the fabric of sustainability in St. John’s. it operates from 4 to 7 pm Sundays and 5 to 7 pm  Tuesdays in EN 1015-E – check facebook for current events.

today is fall, and time for the work done in summer 2014 by the Conservation Corps NL thegreenrock.ca Green Team to roll out!

in July and August the gang of four – Tamara Segura, Chris Ball, David Maher and Team Lead Jeff Smyth talked and taped, walked in the sun, swung on the swings, got out there and got inspired by the great green good going on in the Northeast Avalon.  Over the coming months their work will be released on thegreenrock.ca.

in this vid join David as he talks the talk and walks the walk in the old east end of St. John’s.  he’s live about Green Tips – simple to make green easy.  watch as he whips out the water bottle, and where does that Metrobus pass come from?  also notice the beaming sun of St. John’s in July.  original guitar music by Chris, Tamara is filming, and Jeff directed and produced.

thegreenrock.ca in the woods: lesson 4

hard is good.

the water in the bay at indian cove is clear and inviting.   but the welcome is not warm   it’s to the bone cold.  it takes a special kind of something and a wetsuit for imnersion.

even when it’s roasting hot and you head to the water anticipating cool refreshment and you walk in.
